Quote from the Introduction of Jacques-Alain Miller in Analysis Number Six 1995

The circumstances: Brigitte Jacques, whose ‘Elvire/Jouvet 40’ is a success on the stage these days, produced at the time Wedekind’s ‘Spring Awakening’. I (Jacques-Alain Miller) translated for her a passage from the ‘Minute of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society, the meeting of 13 February 1907, dedicated to the play, and I asked Jacques Lacan for a text. He wrote the text that follows, which was initially published as a preface to the programme, and then subsequently with the play itself (Gallimard, 1974)

“That the raised veil shows nothing—that is the principle of initiation (at least in society’s good manners).

I have indicated the link all this has to the mystery of language and the fact that it is by proposing an enigma that one finds the meaning of meaning.” From Lacan, J., “Spring Awakenings,” Analysis 6, 1994, p. 33 (translated by Sylvia Rodriguez.)

“Que le voile levé ne montre rien, voilà le principe de l’initiation (aux bonnes manières de la société, tout au moins).

J’ai indiqué le lien de tout cela au mystère du langage et au fait que ce soit à proposer l’énigme que se trouve le sens du sens. “ French text is from Pas‐tout Lacan and Autres écrits. Originally published in Ornicar? No. 39 (1986), pp. 5‐7.
