Wednesday 13th May 1970 : Session 12 : As the Law Faculty was closed because of the date, the Seminar could not be held. Jacques Lacan answered a certain number of questions that were put to him ‘on the steps of the Pantheon’. This is the transcription of Lacan’s answers. Several questions, inaudible on the recording, are missing. : p209-218

Note on Translation: It would appear that ‘l’angoisse’ has once again been translated as Anxiety. This should be anguish or dread. For example, Kierkegaarde’s book is better translated as ‘The Concept of Dread’, not The Concept of Anxiety’.

Jacques Lacan’s answers refer to Georg Hegel, Sigmund Freud, Søren Kierkegaard, Alexandre Kojève & Seminar X.

pXII6-7 of Cormac Gallagher’s translation :

(6) X: As regards anxiety [anguish], I thought it was the opposite of enjoyment.

JL : What I insist on when I tackle affects, is that this affect precisely can be distinguished from all others, in that it is said to be without an object. Look at everything that has been written about anxiety, this is what people always insist on – fear can be referred to an object, if this object can be expressed, it is formed. Whereas anxiety [anguish, dread] is said to be without an object. I say on the contrary that anxiety [anguish, dread] is not without an object. I already articulated this eight years ago, and it is very clear that I still have to explain it to you. At that time I did not designate this object as surplus enjoying, which proves that these was something that had to be constructed before I could name it as such. It is very precisely the… I cannot say the name, because precisely it is not a name. It is surplus enjoying, this is what we will have to look at, but it is not nameable, even though it can be approximately named, expressed, in this way. That is why it has been expressed in terms of surplus value. This object without which there is no anxiety [anguish, dread], perhaps cannot be tackled in any other way. This is precisely what I have given clearer and clearer shape to over the years.
