Introduction to Lacan-Bibliothèque, Seminars – Jacques Lacan – J.L. and not J.L. versions (Internet translation)

The École lacanienne de psychanalyse’s library makes all of Jacques Lacan’s seminars available to the Internet public, in the basic form of available stenotypes. A stenographer assisted Jacques Lacan in each of his seminar sessions, from 1953 to 1980. At the end of each session, she typed up the stenotype tapes, in duplicate or triplicate, using a process that had been famous for a century: carbon paper.

For most of the seventies, J.L. versions were supplemented by others which, whatever their merits, were not of the same quality. While they sometimes correct errors, it is never out of the question for them to add others of their own, which are all the more difficult to perceive since, unlike J.L., their texts often have a typographical quality that is not matched by an equal critical effort.

It goes without saying that all these documents are in image format (.pdf).

Mathemes

Jacques Lacan’s Mathemes

Here is the computer version of a Mathematics Thesaurus taken from written texts and from Dr. Lacan. It covers all the texts written by Lacan and all the seminars he held in 1953 at 1979. Accompanying this thesaurus, there is a search tool allowing to visualize the citations comprising one or more mathemes, these appearing in chronological order.

Elements established from the text
Figure 21.8.1: Necessary, contingent, impossible, possible
Reality is three.
Logic is the knowledge of reality.
The subject is that which is the cause.
Logic is a form of knowledge.
Death only exists where there is sexual reproduction.
Masochism is fake, it is knowledge.
The hole in the real is where there is no sexual intercourse.
One connotes jouissance.
A logical, inscribable saying is knowledge.
In the real, there is a hole.
The necessary is that which never ceases to be written.
To know everything, there must be invention.

Miller, An interpretation is an act of saying that targets the speaking body and does so in order to produce an event, in order to provoke a gut-reaction, said Lacan[35]. This is something that can’t be anticipated, but which is verified retroactively, for the jouissance-effect is incalculable. All that analysis can do is to accord to the pulsation of the speaking body in order to insinuate itself into the symptom. When one analyses the unconscious, the meaning of interpretation is the truth. When one analyses the speaking body, the meaning of interpretation is jouissance. This displacement from truth to jouissance sets the measure of what analytic practice is becoming in the era of the parlêtre.

p12 of Cormac Gallagher’s translation, Draft 2, Checked against Staferla page 58 and some alterations made, JE,

So then, so then. What is involved in knowledge?

Naturally, I have not managed at this time, namely, 1.20, or something like that… 24, I have not managed at this hour, to tell you even a quarter of what I should get into your guts, because that is the function of the saying. If I do not say it to you it is not enough for me to write it, but I am all the same going to give you a little sample of what can be written, because without this reflection on writing, without what ensures that the saying comes to be written, there is no way for me to make you sense the dimension in which unconscious knowledge subsists. And what you must do as a supplementary step, is to notice that if (what) I am making you aware by telling you that the unconscious does not discover anything… because there is nothing to discover, there is nothing to discover in the Real, since here there is a hole. …If the unconscious, here, invents, it is all the more precious for you to notice that in logic it is the same thing, namely, that if Aristotle had not invented it, the first clearing of the way, namely, to make the saying go into this grinder of being, thanks to which he makes syllogisms – naturally syllogisms were made before him, simply people did not know that they were syllogisms. In order to notice it, it must be invented: to see where the hole is, the edge of the Real must be seen.
