Jacques Lacan, Le Séminaire livre XV, L’Acte psychanalytique, Texte établi par Jacques-Alain Miller : Seuil & Le Champ Freudien (9th February 2024)

Note

Elizabeth Roudinesco notes*, 12th February 2024, that this seminar takes place against a backdrop of trouble in the SPP (Société Psychoanalytique de Paris) about psychoanalytic practice & training methods which were put in place. Also the student strikes took place in April and May 1968. Further, it is noted that the editor, Jacques-Alain Miller has omitted the session of 31st January 1968, during which, in Lacan’s absence, his main disciples discussed the content of his teaching, and the very short one of 8th May 1968, where he expressed solidarity with the strike order launched by the National Union of Higher Education. Confrontation with other disciplines, mathematics, linguistics, etc, through their proponents is how Lacan developed his position. Throughout Seminar IV, Jacques Lacan is confronting Sacha Nacht & his followers, in their absence and this follows the split of 1953. These confrontations are missing.

This omission of other’s interventions is not new. They are also missing from Seminar VII, XVII & XX and maybe others. However, they appear to be included in Seminars I, II, III, XI, & XXIII. Therefore, these omissions are not a new editorial decision, but the continuance of a tradition of reducing Jacques Lacan’s working method to a textbook.

Notes from Lacan’s intervention during the strike by the S. N. E. S. (the union of teachers in higher education)

P1 of Cormac Gallagher’s translation : He then evokes his 1966 text “Science and Truth” * as having contemporary relevance for what is not simply unruliness,

P15.5.68 2 of Cormac Gallagher’s translation : Let us try call that without insisting too heavily on the fact that after all I myself highlighted that somewhere in my Écrits there is a text called Science and Truth* which is not completely out of season, since it has a little idea that one cannot reduce what is happening to what we might call the effects of a turbulence that is more or less everywhere.

Annex I – Lecture of 19th June 1968

P19.6.68 7 of Cormac Gallagher’s translation : To this relation of the subject to the Other, psychoanalysis contributes a radically new dimension. It is more than what I called just now, called just now, like that, a discovery. A discovery still preserves something anecdotal about. This is a profound modification of the whole relationship.

There is a word that I brought in here a few years ago, into this dialectic. It is the word truth. And then, in truth, before articulating it precisely as I did here on a particular day, the perfectly logical mark of the article Truth and Science*, in my Écrits bears witness to, I had given to the word another function, in an article called The Freudian Things**, where one can red these terms: ‘Me, the truth, I speak.’
