If an object becomes an object of choice, it is quite clear that this is not the same as it becoming the support of the subject’s identification. This is incredibly instructive in itself and it also brings instruction to the unsettling ease with which everyone seems to be comfortable, using the terms as strict equivalents both in observation and theorisation, without asking for anything more.

If we ask for something more, we get an article like the one written by Gustave Hans Graber, “The two Types of Identification Mechanism” [Les deux espèces de mécanismes d’identification] in Imago, 1937, which is the most dizzying thing one can imagine. For everything seems to be resolved for him in the distinction between active identification and passive identification. When we take a closer look, it is impossible not to see – he sees it himself – the active and passive poles of every kind of identification, such that we really must return to Freud, and in some sense take up his way of articulating the question again, point for point.

Historical Relations – Note taken from the Mirror Stage’s timeline

Jacques Lacan delivered an early version of The Mirror Stage to the Fourteenth International Congress of Psychoanalysis in Marienbad (2nd to 8th August 1936) with Ernest Jones presiding. It was part of the second scientific session held on 3rd August 1936 at 3:40pm, and was listed under the title “The Looking-Glass Phase” in IJP XVIII, 1(1937), p78. There is clearly a relation between this paper & Jacques Lacan’s presenting in Marienbad. Both presentations are against a background of the politics in Germany & Switzerland in 1936. Jacques Lacan, in choosing this paper in 1957, is not acting in the off the cuff manner, he appears to suggest.
